Your first session

At your first session we will discuss your concerns and develop some options together about what kind of approaches or services will meet your needs.

You will receive some relief from the intensity of the issues you face, and have a clearer way forward.

You may like to book a longer session (90 mins) for your first session, especially if attending as a couple.

How many sessions?

On average most people attend for 5 to 7 sessions if it is a general counselling issue, however this is not fixed and can be shorter or longer as you require.

For example, a couple might attend for three sessions to address how to agree on parenting approaches and boundary issues with a newly constituted family where step-parenting will be involved. Within this process, they might also determine if counselling is required for the children, or as a family.

For another person seeking counselling to address repetitively entering relationships that are destructive, we might find a relationship between current expectations and past abuse or other family dynamics. This might require longer-term counselling, for example 10 or more sessions over a year.

In another case, for example, in complex trauma, we might refer for EMDR counselling and provide the structure for overall counselling and change to occur, which may also involve neurofeedback.

We receive many referrals from trauma counsellors who have found that combining neurofeedback with their trauma-focussed psychotherapy has yielded better results. This is due to fact that, especially with traumatic experiences, the nervous system and body generally develops a new memory or a ‘new bicycle to ride’ when certain triggers present. Many of our day-to-day responses to stressful events are based in procedural memory, which is somatic. Neurofeedback is well-placed to address the procedural and somatic memory issues associated with trauma.

When you attend for counselling, we will comprehensively address with you what may be required to achieve the change or acceptance that is required.

Can I claim a Medicare or Private Health rebate for counselling?

Your GP, Psychiatrist or Pediatrician can make a referral for counselling under the Better Access scheme. This enables us to work as a team with your doctor when required, and also enables you to claim a Medicare rebate for up to ten sessions per calendar year.

You may also choose to attend counselling independently of your doctor, and forego the Medicare rebate. When you attend for coaching or increased work performance issues, your accountant can advise you if your fee is tax deductible.

At present, the only Private Health Providers that cover our services are Teacher’s Health and Nurses and Midwives Health. We are hopeful that counselling and neurofeedback will soon also be covered by other providers.

We also accept referrals from NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) and Open Arms (Veterans & Veteran’s Families Counselling Service).
