QEEG (Brain Mapping)

A Quantitative Electroencephalogram (QEEG) is a non invasive and highly reliable assessment process that measures the electrical activity across the cerebral cortex through the scalp.

EEGs detect anomalies in brain waves after head injury, stroke, and brain tumour. Mental health conditions such as Anxiety, Depression, PTSD and cPTSD may show irregularities, as will migraines, dementia, seizure activity, and neurodevelopmental conditions such as ADHD and Autism.

During a QEEG assessment, a cloth cap with electrodes at the precise locations of the International 10-20 system is placed on your head and this cap is connected to an amplifier (the amplifier receives signals from the electrodes and amplifies them to allow the computer to analyze and display them). A small amount of conductive jelly is inserted into each site to ensure an accurate reading. Readings are taken under different conditions to observe how your brain functions under these varying conditions, for example, with eyes open, closed, or when performing a task.

The ”Q” in QEEG stands for the quantitative analysis that is carried out with the raw data collected. Additional software is used to identify under or over activity of the brain. We then look for correlations of these brain patterns or biomarkers that have been documented in psychological and/or behavioural concerns. Your EEG brain activity is compared to standardised data bases to identify whether your brain activity statistically differs from the norm and/or whether your EEG is statistically similar to groups that have similar diagnoses or symptoms as you. A QEEG assessment will provide information to identify where the brain is not operating optimally.  This information is then used to develop individualised protocols for your goals and priorities for neurofeedback.
